It became prominent in the medieval period from the 12th century onwards and in more modern times. The name fede is from the Italian phrase \u201cmani in fede\u201d or \u201chands clasped in faith\u201d. In this example there is a heart set with a sapphire\u00a0in the centre with the hands on either side, as opposed to being hidden. It is a wonderful expression of love and would make a perfect and unusual engagement ring.
