They symbolised \u201cnew beginnings\u201d so they would have been given as a marriage gift or for the birth of a child. This crescent is more unusual than most crescents as it has been set with graduated rose diamonds and there is a floral motif within the curve that adds extra meaning. The back plate used to have a screw so it may well have been used as part of a tiara or a pendant when not being worn as a brooch.
