An impressive example of a Suffragette pendant that was made circa 1910. It is a very pretty flower burst design composed of a peridot in the centre with eight flower sprigs set with natural split pearls and amethysts and a bale set with further natural split pearls. It is 15ct gold. The meanings of the stones and pearls are, Peridot (Green colour meaning \u201cgive\u201d), Pearls ( White colour meaning \u201cwomen\u201d), and Amethysts (Violet colour meaning \u201cvotes\u201d). This pendant would have been worn by sympathisers of the Suffrage movement as a sign to other women of their feelings.<\/p>\n
Mrs Pethick-Lawrence, editor of the weekly newspaper Votes for Women, explained the symbolism of the colours in spring 1908: \u201cPurple\/red as everyone knows is the royal colour. It stands for the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, the instinct of freedom and dignity; white stands for purity in private and public life; green is the colour of hope and the emblem of spring.\u201d In other words, she said, the colours stood for freedom and dignity, purity and hope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
