A charming brooch that was made circa 1860. It is composed of a shell cameo that has been beautifully carved to represent the allegory of night and day, namely the Greek Goddesses Eos and Selene.
\nEos is the Greek Goddess of the Day (and of the Dawn) and her sister Selene the Goddess of the Night (and Moon). They are portrayed together to symbolise the Allegory of Day and Night. Symbols of the Night as Moon and Star, the veiled head adorned with Opium Poppy Seeds, Selene taking a sleeping attitude with closed eyes and head down, the owl, symbol of the night, are all shown, as are the symbols of the Day too, Eos has flowers in her hair and is wide awake with eyes open and head up.
\nThe cameo was most likely carved in Naples, Italy then mounted in England in an ornate 15ct gold frame.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
