The lapidarist has hollowed out the back of the large cabochon garnet (known as a &#8220;carbuncle&#8221;) so that more light penetrates. The garnet has also been foiled on the reverse. The result is a gorgeous deep ruby red colour.\u00a0 The mount is studded with graduated rose diamonds in a flower and petal design. The pendant was made circa 1880 when there was a huge fashion for <span class=\"glossary-tooltip glossary-term-369617\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"glossary-link\"><span class=\"glossary-underline\">cabochon<\/span><\/span><\/span> garnets. This was known as the Holbeinesque period which harked back to the Renaissance.
