Tennis first began in England in the mid 1800s. At that time Victorian ladies held highly regulated lives. They weren\u2019t allowed to pick flowers in parks or to attend public meetings. They were, however, allowed a few leisure activities and one of the most popular was tennis. It began as a casual sport but once the men got involved, the game became more competitive with score-keeping. Official rules for tennis were finalised in 1874.
