This is a wonderful pair of heart brooches. They are 15ct gold and were made around 1910 when the Suffrage movement was gathering pace. The use of colours gives the clue that not only are they decorative pieces of jewellery but they send a message to sympathisers of the Suffragette movement. G (green enamel) Give. W (white diamonds\/pearls) Women. V (violet\/red enamel) Votes. They adopted these colours in 1908. Purple\/red represented royalty and \u201cthe royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, the instinct of freedom and dignity\u201d. White represented purity, and green represented hope and \u201cthe emblem of spring.\u201d The two hearts are red and green enamel with rose diamonds surrounding them and a small rose diamond in the centre of each one, with natural bouton pearl terminals. They are joined by a natural pearl set 15ct gold chain. There is a glazed locket on the reverse of one of the hearts. The brooches are in their original case retailed by Percy Edwards Company, 71 & 72 Piccadilly. They had the Royal warrant to Hm The King as displayed on the silk lining.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
