Outdoor curling was very popular in Scotland between the 16th and 19th centuries because the climate provided good ice conditions every winter. The game consists of two teams, each with four players, who take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones or rocks, across the ice curling sheet toward the house, a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. This seal may have been presented to the winner so it was most likely a special commission. It is 15ct gold and the base is smokey quartz with a monogram &#8220;Gloria Merces Virtutis&#8221; with the letter K within a complex monogram.
