It must have been a special commission as a present for Miss Hope Hollister prior to her wedding to Ross Banks Macdonald on June 24th 1956 in East Hampton, New York. It is in the form of a letter with her address and an enamelled franked airmail US postage stamp. It opens to reveal a hinged page within that has not been engraved. The catch is a cabochon sapphire. Most traditional lockets have compartments for the placement of photographs, but here, Cartier offered a novel and unique way to commemorate a special occasion by utilising the direct engraved photo method.
