The business was set up in Birmingham in an area known as the Jewellery quarter in adjoining buildings 78 and 79 Vyse Street. The company became known around the world. The firm made a wide range of jewellery, notably swallow designs, popular during the Wars wars and Egyptian style snake designs, after Egyptologist Howard Carter made ancient Egypt fashionable. It finally stopped trading in 1981. For its 82 year history the firm was run as a family business. The premises in Vyse Stree are now a museum.
This bangle is typical of their work and is a facetedA faceted stone has small, flat-cut surfaces that make a sparkling effect on transparent stones. Facets act as both mirrors and windows. It has a hidden tongue hinge and a safety chainA small chain applied to a piece of jewellery with the purpose of adding additional security to prevent loss. On bracelets and necklaces a safety chain will often join the clasp ends should the clasp fail. On a brooch it is often attached to a small pin which is to be used in tandem with the main brooch pin. for added security.
