Victorian Silver & Natural Split Pearl Arrow Brooch with Cat’s Eye Chrysoberyl Bug

Written by Olly Gerrish

An interesting silver brooch that was made circa 1880-1900. It is composed of an arrow that has been set with natural split pearls. On the bar is a bug that has been set with a cat’s eye chrysoberyl, natural split pearls and garnet cabochon eyes. The arrow represents ‘mortality’ or ‘love’. The bug was partly inspired by the Ancient Egyptians and in partly by a renewed love of nature and the countryside in light of rapid urbanisation, natural motifs like insects were seen as genteel, nurturing and virtuous.
