At that time this movement was a reaction to the overblown high VictorianJewellery made in the the Victorian era (1839-1901). style and artists looked to the Far East for inspiration. Japanese art was greatly admired in its relative simplicity so the Aesthetic period also became known as Japonism. This locket has been engraved and depicts a crane amid flowers with a dragonfly above and a fan. It has been applied with red and yellow gold overlay. It opens to reveal two compartments for photographs.
