Victorian Silver & Gold Overlay Locket with Crane & Dragonfly Detail

781T
320 Admirers
Written by Olly Gerrish

A charming silver locket that was made in 1880 in Birmingham during the Aesthetic period. At that time this movement was a reaction to the overblown high Victorian style and artists looked to the Far East for inspiration. Japanese art was greatly admired in its relative simplicity so the Aesthetic period also became known as Japonism. This locket has been engraved and depicts a crane amid flowers with a dragonfly above and a fan. It has been applied with red and yellow gold overlay. It opens to reveal two compartments for photographs.
