Victorian Jet Brooch of a Bird with her Chicks

Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual carved jet brooch that was made prior to 1884. It has a kite mark on the reverse. During the Victorian Era a diamond-shaped design Registration Mark (1842-1883), known as a “kitemark” was used on jewellery and other decorative arts. These marks were stamped to indicate the date a particular design was registered, similar to a patent mark. Kitemarks were replaced by Registration Serial Numbers in 1884. The subject is charming, a bird is feeding her three chicks in the nest. It could have originally been given as a present to a wife who had given birth.
