Victorian 18ct Gold Snake Necklace set with Emeralds & Rubies

636W
80 Admirers
Written by Olly Gerrish

A good 18ct gold snake necklace that was made circa 1860-1880. The chain articulated like a snake’s body and the clasp enters the side of the snake’s mouth. The snake’s head has been applied with gold scrolls with an etched background. It has been claw set with two cabochon cut rubies for the eyes and three emeralds with rubies in between.  There is a heart shaped drop in the same design and claw set with a further emerald and three rubies. To the reverse is a glazed compartment that would have originally held a lock of hair.

Most Victorian jewellery is full of hidden meanings. In the Victorian era it became very fashionable to wear snake jewellery after Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with the very first engagement ring, which was in the image of a snake with an emerald set head.

The snake is an emblem of “Eternal love” so what a wonderful gift to someone you adore.
