From the Greek amethystos meaning 'a remedy against drunkedness', it was believed to prevent intoxication and ensure the wearer retains a clear head and quick wit. It was once considered as valuable as ruby, sapphire and emerald. necklace in the original tooled gold and Burgundy red Moroccan leather case from Marshall & Sons,87 George Street Edinburgh who also held the Royal Warrant. It was made circa 1860-1880 and is composed of five well matched amethyst drops, two pear shaped and three oval cut stones. The ornate gold claws are very unusual and a sign of real quality in the workmanship. They are connected by snake link chains with an engraved barrel clasp. When worn it looks spectacular and frames the neck beautifully. There was originally a pair of matching earrings but these are now sadly missing.
So often these necklaces have been broken up and made in to earrings so it was lovely to find an original necklace in its case.
