I wonder if he died from a skiing or climbing accident. The outside is black enamelA pigmented glass-like material used in powdered form and fused onto the metal surface of a piece of jewellery. with entwined gold rope work and “In Memory of” in Gothick lettering around the bandA type of ring which is an equal width all the way round. They are traditionally used for wedding rings.
