It is composed of a shell cameoA layered stone or shell in which the design is cut in relief where the main design is carved onto the top layer and the remainder is carved away to reveal the next layer using the natural colours of the stone or shell to produce the different shadings of the carving. This is done in shell, coral, lava and various stones. that has been beautifully carved to represent the allegory of night and day, namely the Greek Goddesses Eos and Selene.
Eos is the Greek Goddess of the Day (and of the Dawn) and her sister Selene the Goddess of the Night (and Moon). They are portrayed together to symbolise the Allegory of Day and Night. Symbols of the Night as Moon and Star, the veiled head adorned with Opium Poppy Seeds, Selene taking a sleeping attitude with closed eyes and head down, the owl, symbol of the night, are all shown, as are the symbols of the Day too, Eos has flowers in her hair and is wide awake with eyes open and head up.
The cameo was most likely carved in Naples, Italy then mounted in England in an ornate 15ct62.5% pure gold (or 625 parts pure gold and 375 parts other metals). Popular during the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras but was discontinued in the mid-1930s. gold frame.
