Written by Olly Gerrish

A sweet pair of 18ct gold giardinetti earrings that were made in the 1930-1940 period. They have each been set with carved sapphire flowers and three diamonds with calibre rubies along the base of the baskets. Flowers were a fashionable theme in jewellery during the second half of the 18th century. and ‘giardinetti’ items (from the Italian, meaning ‘little garden’) became popular. They had tiny blossoms set with an assortment of precious stones, asymmetrically arranged, and were given as tokens of love. The idea continued through the Victorian era and up to the present day. They can either be worn with the clip on fittings, if your ears are not pierced, or they have ingenious hinged posts that can be used in conjunction with the clips for pierced ears.
