Post Medieval Gold Posy Ring engraved inside with ‘As god hath apoynted be contente’

871P
Written by Olly Gerrish

Posy rings derive their name from the French word “posy” or “poesy”, a derivative of poetry meaning short rhyme. They were popular during the 15th through the 17th centuries in both England and France as lovers’ gifts, used to communicate secret messages of love between the giver and the recipient. This D-shaped large man’s ring is very comfortable to wear and dates circa 1650-1750. The outside is plain and inside there is a secret message in an italic script that reads “As god hath apoynted be contente” This is a Biblical phrase. This ring is a size T 1/2 and cannot be resized.

This ring is on the British Museum approved partnership website, Portable Antiquities Scheme Record ID: DOR-31404C (www.finds.org.uk).
