Floral studies and naturalistic subjects are the principal motifs which feature in these designs. brooch. “Pietra dura” which is italian for “Hard stone” refers to a Florentine mosaicAn object decorated with many small adjacent pieces of inlaid glass or stone arranged to form a design. technique that is descendant from the Roman opus sectile mosaic style. In this technique, carefully sawn pieces of gemstones are fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle to form an image. It is an incredibly painstaking process and this brooch is exceptionally fine workmanship and is in the form of a bunch of roses and forget me nots. The 18ct75% pure gold (or 750 parts pure gold and 250 parts other metals) gold mount has applied gold in the Etruscan Revival style that was popular at that time. It was made circa 1860-1880 in Italy. The 18ct gold mount may be English. It is in excellent condition.
