Indian 19th Century Heart Shaped Locket with Enamel Motifs

29W
120 Admirers
Written by Olly Gerrish

A beautiful heart shaped locket that was made in Jaipur in the late 19th century. Jaipur has long been famous for its enamel work. Jai Singh 11 founded the city of Jaipur in 1727. He was fascinated by gems and jewels and encouraged craftsmen to settle in the new city. It gradually became the thriving commercial city that it is today.  This heart is typical of the fine workmanship with red white blue and green enamel motifs of birds, flowers and a peacock. The peacock represents Royalty and power in India. A lovely and unusual jewel to wear on a fine chain.
