Georgian Gold Stuart Crystal Ring with Gold Thread Detail

Written by Olly Gerrish

This Stuart Crystal ring is an elegant square with angular corners, faceted at the sides with a clear centre showing the twisted gold thread which is possibly a monogram. On either side are two diamonds. The reverse is typical of the shell back design of the period. The ring dates to circa 1740. Eighteenth century rings were foil backed to capture all the surrounding light by day or candle at night. In the mid 17th century King Charles I was executed. Stuart crystal jewellery was made to show support to and sympathy of the Stuart monarchy and the deceased king.
