Georgian 9ct Gold & Rose Cut Garnet Lyre Pendant

722R
440 Admirers
Written by Olly Gerrish

A pretty Georgian pendant that was made circa 1820. It features a lyre which is a stringed musical instrument well known for its use in Classical Antiquity and later. The recitations of the Ancient Greeks were accompanied by lyre playing. The lyre of Classical Antiquity was ordinarily played by being strummed with a plectrum, like a guitar or a zither, rather than being plucked, like a harp. In the Georgian period there was a fashion for the Antique and many pieces of jewellery harked back to the Greeks. It has been set with four rose garnets that represent “Love” so this would originally have been given as a token of affection
