Georgian 15ct Gold Sulphide Brooch of Cornelia, Showing her Children as Her Only Ornaments

Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual gold and sulphide that was made circa 1800. The subject is Cornelia, mother of the Gracchi, showing her children as her only ornaments. It was taken from a popular print by Bartolozzi in 1783 after an original work by Benjamin West PRA the British American artist (1783-1820). The work shows Cornelia daughter of the Roman general Scipio Africanus and wife of Tiberius Graccus, her two sons Tiberius and Gaius known as the Gracchi. She is demonstrating that her jewellery is nothing compared to her children who are her true treasures.
Sulphides were popularised by Apsley Pellatt and James Tassie in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Sulphides are also known as cameo incrustations and are quite rare.
