Early 19th Century French Natural Pearl & Blue Glass Locket & Pendant With Memorial Urn & Flowers

Written by Olly Gerrish

An 18ct gold French, early 19th Century pendant, set with natural pearls onto blue glass with a black enamel urn and flower motif. It is an impressive piece of jewellery, very well made and unusual. It hinges open on the back and originally would had held a lock of hair. It looks fantastic on a black velvet ribbon.

At the time, France had lost a lot of men due to The Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815) which were a series of major conflicts pitting the French Empire and its allies, led by Napoleon I, against a fluctuating array of European powers formed into various coalitions. It produced a brief period of French domination over most of continental Europe. It is likely this pendant was specially commissioned in memory of a loved one that died during this time.
