They are known as “Night and Day earrings”. The workmanship is incredible with fine cannetilleA type of metal decoration in the form of thin wires making a coarse filigree pattern, sometimes enhanced with a gemstone or enamelling. It is named after the type of embroidery made with very twisted gold or silver thread. The patterns are often in the form of scrolls or rosettes made of tightly coiled wire.
work wich may have been inspired by embroidery in France in the early 1800s. Although after the Napoleonic wars, precious metals were extremely scarce on the European continent so the more practical assumption is that it was an answer to the lack of gold in the early nineteenth century as this style of jewellery used only a small amount of gold. This intricate wirework was made completely by hand and took hours to complete. These earrings are a wonderful survival from that time. The case has the original writing on the outside underneath in ink “Boucle D’oreilles bijou, Vie le belle…..It seems to be an address of the jewellers shop.
