This style is known as a “gardinetto” or “giardinetti” and is an ornament in the form of a vase of flowers or a flower basket, especially suited for brooches but sometimes rings and pendants. The colourful items were created from a multi coloured array of gemstones such as rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, but also coloured pasteGlass made to resemble gem materials, which may be moulded, faceted, carved, etc. as in this example. Initially enjoying popularity in the early 1800s these colourful floral gemstone depictions were love tokens to be exchanged with lovers and friends. A resurgence in popularity occurred circa 1910 when this pendant was made.
