Edwardian 9ct Gold Ring set with an Opal

Written by Olly Gerrish

Opal is the birthstone for the month of October.  It is also the stone given to celebrate the 14th year of marriage.. The name opal is thought to be derived from the Sanskrit upala, meaning “precious stone,” and later the Greek derivative “Opallios,” meaning “to see a change of colour.”  This 9ct gold ring has been claw set with a beautiful opal and was made circa 1910.  At that time Australian opals were the new stone on the block and were very fashionable.  The opal displays vivid flashes of blue, green and red.  It speaks for itself which is why the maker chose not to add diamonds or any other distraction from the stone.
