Edwardian 9ct Back & Front Large Oval Locket with Swallow Motif

Written by Olly Gerrish

A large oval locket that was made circa 1900-1910. It is 9ct back and front. The term “9ct Back & Front” means the front and back are 9ct gold and the inner frames and hinges are metal. It has been engraved with a swallow and a branch of flowers on one side. The swallow was considered daring, risk-seeking, and a symbol of change for good in the future. It also meant “Everlasting love” and “loyalty” as swallows mate for life. On the other side is a branch of flowers with a butterfly. For hundreds of years butterflies have been symbols of transformation, rebirth and renewal. It opens to reveal two areas for photographs. It has decorative gold work around the edges and a pretty swag design above the locket. A perfect gift to someone that you love.
