Edwardian 18ct Gold Turtle Brooch or Pendant set with Diamonds, Green Garnets & a Large Opal

360 Admirers Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

Around the world the turtle can be seen as a symbol of wisdom and knowledge.   It can also be regarded as personifying water, the moon, the Earth, time, immortality, and fertility.  This brooch has been beautifully made circa 1910 and has been set with a large cabochon cut opal. It is surrounded by well matched old mine cut diamonds and there is a further diamond in his head.  His eyes, legs and tail have all been set with green garnets. This was a popular combination of stones in the Edwardian period. Green garnets or demantoid garnets as they are known were the new stones on the block, having been discovered in Russia. They are a glorious apple green colour and are rare stones.  It can be worn as a brooch or a pendant.
