Written by Olly Gerrish

This is a stunning brooch. It is set with diamonds, green garnets (demantoid garnets) and a pearl. It was made circa 1910 and exhibits the colours of the Suffragette movement. Green, Green garnet “Give”, White, Pearl “Women”. Vermilion, Ruby,”Votes”. The purple was for loyalty and dignity, white for purity, and green for hope designed in 1908 by the co-editor of Votes for Women, Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence. Jewellery such as this brooch was worn so that the wearers sent out a secret message to other women that they supported the movement.
