Early Victorian 18ct Gold Mourning Ring with Banded Sardonyx of a Flower

300S
360 Admirers
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual 18ct gold ring that was made circa 1840 as it has a date engraved inside of 1848. It is a mourning ring. Many were made in the Georgian and Victorian periods and were worn in remembrance of a husband, brother and other members of the family. This example has been set with a carved banded sardonyx to represent a flower and has a small bright little diamond in the centre. The shoulders are repoussé work with a scroll motif. Today these rings are collected and worn for their beauty.
