Early 19th Century 18ct Gold & Black Enamel Ring set with a Natural Pearl & Rose Diamonds

Written by Olly Gerrish

A beautiful 18ct gold mourning ring that was made circa 1830.  It has been enamelled in black and has been set with a natural pearl in the centre with eight small diamonds around it.  There are further rose diamonds in slanting bands on either side.  It has a glazed locket to the reverse which would have been originally intended to hold a lock of hair. The use of pearls in mourning rings was common as they not only represented tears but eternal love. The diamonds also represent eternal love and the black enamel is for mourning. These rings are collectable in their own right as they are wonderful survivors from the early 19th century
