Early 19th Century 15ct Gold Fede Ring with Ruby & Diamond set Flower

540Y
Written by Olly Gerrish

The fede ring has a long history dating back to antiquity. The major hallmark of this type of ring is the motif of two hands traditionally one female and the other male, clasped together. Known from the original Italian “mani in fede” (hands in faith and trust), this style of ring was popular during the Renaissance and given as a token of betrothal.

This ring features the hands but also has a flower in the centre that has been claw set with five six rubies and an old mine cut  diamond . This also send the message of love.  It was made circa 1830-1850 and has been assayed in Birmingham. The date letter is missing so I cannot ascertain the exact year that it was made.

What a charming engagement or dress ring.
