Cartier 14ct Gold Hinged Locket in the Form of a Letter with Internal Pages

80H
320 Admirers
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual 14ct gold heavy gauge vintage piece made by Cartier New York around 1955. It must have been a special commission as a present for Miss Hope Hollister prior to her wedding to Ross Banks Macdonald on June 24th 1956 in East Hampton, New York. It is in the form of a letter with her address and an enamelled franked airmail US postage stamp. It opens to reveal a hinged page within that has not been engraved. The catch is a cabochon sapphire. Most traditional lockets have compartments for the placement of photographs, but here, Cartier offered a novel and unique way to commemorate a special occasion by utilising the direct engraved photo method. It was never carried out in this case.

This unusual, scarce piece is a fascinating example of a mid-century special commission designed by Cartier, New York.
