Written by Olly Gerrish

A 19th century 18ct gold Fede ring that was made in Australia. It is signed Turner inside the shank. WJ Turner was based in Beechworth, Victoria and was a well known man in his time. He exhibited at the London International Exhibition in 1862. His main field was the gold setting of precious stones from the Ovens and Woolshed districts of Victoria, although, as in this example of a Fede ring he made other items. This ring is finely made and dates from around the 1860s.
The fede ring has a long history dating back to antiquity. The major hallmark of this type of ring is the motif of two hands traditionally one female and the other male, clasped together. Known from the original Italian “mani in fede” (hands in faith and trust), this style of ring was popular during the Renaissance and given as a token of betrothal.
