Art Nouveau 18ct Gold & Platinum, Plique-à-jour & Diamond Ring

103U
400 Admirers Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual 18ct gold ring that was made circa 1900-1910. It is typical of the Art Nouveau period with the botanical subject of a flower sprig claw set with old European cut diamonds with small diamonds in the leaves. The background has been enamelled in the Plique-à-jour technique in an eau de nil colour. Plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained glass and is considered very challenging technically.
