Art Deco Two Stone Black Opal & Opal Pendant on Chain

Written by Olly Gerrish

A fabulous and impressive two stone opal pendant. The top opal is a black opal and the much larger bottom opal which is not a black opal, is most likely cut from the same material, as it displays exactly the same colours as the smaller opal. They are large stones and very colourful with flashes of red, green and blue. In the centre of the knife edge drop is a diamond.

A lot of these stones were mined at lightning ridge in Australia in the 1900s and exported to Europe for cutting and polishing in Germany. When Australian opals appeared on the world market in the 1890s, the Hungarian mines spread the idea that it was not genuine, probably because gems with such brilliant fire had not been seen before. Eventually Australia became the premier opal producer of the world, becoming famous for Lightning Ridge’s colourful and rare black and crystal stone.
