Art Deco 18ct Gold & Platinum, Emerald & Diamond Octagonal Shaped Ring

Written by Olly Gerrish

A very pretty 18ct gold ring with a platinum top that was made in the 1920s. It has been set with a rectangular shaped emerald that is a good even colour and most likely of Columbian origin. It is a deeper green than is shown in the photographs. It is surrounded by well matched white diamonds in an octagonal setting. The edges of the platinum have been millgrained. This is when the edges of the metal have been worked with a knurling tool to produce tiny beads, hence the French name “Millgrain” meaning a thousand beads. It is a lovely ring and would be ideal as an engagement ring as it sits low on the finger so it is practical to wear on a daily basis.
