19th Century 18ct Gold, Cabochon Sapphire & Diamond Holbeinesque Style Ring

Written by Olly Gerrish

This 18ct gold ring is an unusual design and was made circa 1860. It has been claw set with a lovely cabochon cut sapphire. On either side is a pinch collet set old mine cut diamond. The shank is a scroll design that continues all the way around. In the 1860s Holbeinesque, neo-Renaissance or Renaissance Revival style jewellery which had appealed to the Tudor court, was rediscovered by Victorian jewellers and their patrons, reviving a fashion that flourished into the early 1900s. The style is often characterised by a large, centrally-placed cabochon gemstone. Such designs were inspired by the art of Hans Holbein the Younger, and were often copied from jewellery depicted in Holbein’s portraits of Tudor ladies from the court of Henry VIII by jewellers such as John Brogden and Carlo Giuliano. This ring is stylish and very wearable. Please note that we advise against resizing this ring due to the engraving on the shank.
