Princess Eugenie’s Engagement Ring: Get The Look

Want a ring fit for a princess? Look to Princess Eugenie's pink number.

Princess Eugenie of York, the youngest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York, captured attention not only with her royal wedding in 2018 but also with her stunning engagement ring. Jack Brooksbank proposed to Eugenie during a trip to Nicaragua in early 2018, and their love story, which began on a ski trip in 2010, led to a memorable wedding later that year at St. George’s Chapel.

The Proposal

Although Eugenie and Jack had been together for several years, the princess was still taken by surprise when Brooksbank proposed. The romantic setting, by a picturesque lake in Nicaragua, made for the perfect backdrop. Eugenie later shared how the special moment unfolded: “The lake was so beautiful, it was a special light… and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we had been together seven years.”

A Unique Sapphire

While Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring shares similarities with other royal rings (especially her cousin-in-law Kate Middleton) it stands out due to its unique gemstone. Instead of the typical blue sapphire, Eugenie’s ring features a rare padparadscha sapphire, which is prized for its exquisite pink-orange hue. This gemstone is a rare find, often sourced from Sri Lanka, and is highly sought after due to its coral-like colour and changing tones when viewed from different angles.

Jack Brooksbank took great care in selecting the perfect stone, but he didn’t move forward with the design until Eugenie approved. Brookbank really sets the mark for modern proposals whether designing the ring together or proposing without a ring and shopping for one together.

“Why I loved it so much is it changes colour from every different angle that you look at it, which is what I think of Eugenie. She changes colour, and it’s just so amazing.”

Design and Meaning

The padparadscha sapphire, estimated to be between three and four carats, is surrounded by a halo of brilliant-cut diamonds. It’s flanked by two pear-shaped diamonds, adding a unique and modern twist to the traditional halo setting. Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring also honours Royal tradition as it’s set in Welsh gold, which has been used in royal wedding bands for generations.

The design of Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring is reminiscent of her mother Sarah Ferguson’s ruby engagement ring, designed by Prince Andrew. Both rings feature a striking central stone surrounded by diamonds, but Eugenie’s oval sapphire with its pink-orange hue gives it a distinct look that feels romantic and personal.

Rarity and Value

Padparadscha sapphires are among the rarest sapphires on Earth, making Eugenie’s ring even more unique. The rarity of this gemstone, combined with the quality of the diamonds and the royal connection, means the ring is likely valued at between £100,000 to £120,000, though the exact price has never been disclosed.
