Hardstone inlaid pieces such as this were produced mostly in Italy, but this one I believe was made in Ashford, Derbyshire. The industry was backed by the Duke of Devonshire, and with the talent of the local craftsmen took off, and became famous in the area. Pieces turn up and are often labelled as being Italian, but the lilly of the valley, the forget me not’s and the rose are unmistakenly English.
