The lion traditionally symbolises courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness and valour, because historically the lion has been regarded as the \u201cking of beasts\u201d. The art of intaglio cutting dates to as early as the 14th century BC and was practiced by ancient civilisations in Mesopotamia, Assyria, Phoenicia and later in Greece and Rome. It is a highly skilled art and it is especially rare to find sapphire intaglios.<\/p>\n
