William IV Diamond Drop Earrings

808S
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

A stunning pair of diamond drop earrings that were made circa 1840. The graduated diamonds are old mine cut stones. At that time they would most likely have been sourced form the Golconda mines at Kollur in India. Dutch diamond merchants had been bringing large quantities to Europe since 1720. They could also have come from Brazil. Either way they are beautiful stones and glitter, especially in a candlelit setting, which was what they were designed to do in these earrings. The effect is further accentuated by a fringe set with small rose cut diamonds. The fringe articulates, so the separate strands catch the light when worn. The fronts are silver with a gold wash on the reverse. The wires are later additions but are secure fittings with a hinged catch to hold them in position.
