Victorian Silver & Gold Overlay Shield Shaped Locket Engraved with Flowers

316R
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual shield shaped locket that was made in Birmingham in 1881. At the time there was a fashion for applying different coloured gold on to the decoration that is known as gold overlay. In this instance the locket has an engraved floral motif in the centre with applied yellow and to the roses and the leaves. Above is an engraved Japonesque fan decoration. In the 1880s there was a fashion for the “Aesthetic” which is a term inspired by simple naturalistic asymmetrical themes. It was a result of both the Japanese trade relations that had opened around that time and a trend towards a simpler more refined sense of design. “Japonesque” motifs of this era include birds, bamboo, fans and scenes among other motifs. This locket is a good example of the style. It opens at the base to reveal a compartment for a photograph
