Victorian Scottish Silver & Agate Bracelet with Padlock

Written by Olly Gerrish

Always innovative and colourful, Scottish jewellery was made from the 1860s onwards to reflect the new popularity of Scotland as a tourist destination.  Queen Victoria had purchased Balmoral Castle and tartans were worn.  It seemed a logical evolution to collect and polish the numerous agate pebbles in the river beds and so Scottish jewellery was created in many different forms. This bracelet made circa 1860-1880 has been set with various coloured agates, bloodstones and jasper within silver engraved mounts. The reverse is speckled Aberdeen granite.  It is joined by a simple silver padlock.
