Victorian Rose Diamond, Ruby & Sapphire Caduceus Brooch

36K
Written by Olly Gerrish

The caduceus is the traditional symbol of Hermes and features two snakes winding around a winged staff.  It is often mistakenly used as a symbol of medicine. The two snake caduceus design has ancient  associations with trade, eloquence, trickery, and negotiation. An association of the caduceus with medicine has occurred through the ages, where it was sometimes associated with alchemy and wisdom. This brooch is beautifully made and set with three oval sapphires, one ruby and four rose diamonds. It was made circa 1880-1900.
