Find Out MoreGarnets of this size are rarely seen in antique jewellery and this pendant is such an unusual strawberry design. The lapidarist has hollowed out the back of the large cabochon garnet (known as a “carbuncle”) so that more light penetrates. The garnet has also been foiled on the reverse. The result is a gorgeous deep ruby red colour. The mount is studded with graduated rose diamonds in a flower and petal design. The pendant was made circa 1880 when there was a huge fashion for cabochon garnets. This was known as the Holbeinesque period which harked back to the Renaissance. The style was rich and sumptuous, as is this strawberry pendant.
