Find Out MoreA really well carved large ivory cameoA layered stone or shell in which the design is cut in relief where the main design is carved onto the top layer and the remainder is carved away to reveal the next layer using the natural colours of the stone or shell to produce the different shadings of the carving. This is done in shell, coral, lava and various stones. of a young girl with flowers in her hair. It was most likely carved in Dieppe circa 1880. During the 1600s, Dieppe, France was a flourishing seaport and a major commerce centre. The Merchant Prince, D’Ango or the Medici of Dieppe, brought great supplies of elephant tusks from India to the port of Dieppe. The abundance of this material helped to establish Dieppe as a centre known for it’s fine ivory carvings. Even though Dieppe lost its status as a thriving port after the bombardment during the war of 1694 with England, carvings of many intricate pieces, toys, cameos etc, continued to be produced up until the early 20th century. This cameo is a good example of the workmanship and is signed by M.G Souillard.
