168T
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

John Brogden was a renowned English goldsmith noted for his ancient, Egyptian, and Renaissance revival designs. He worked in the Covent Garden area of London, first as Brogden and Garland (1826 to 1835). From 1842 to 1864 the firm at that address was listed as Watherston and Brogden and from 1864 to 1880 the location became Brogden’s alone. he exhibited at London and Paris exhibitions in 1851, 1862, 1867 and 1878.  In 1867 he won a gold medal for his jewellery at the Paris International Exhibition. Along with the firm Giuliano he produced some of England’s best examples of revival-style jewellery. Brogden was noted for his superior granulation and filigree work along with outstanding technical skills.  Even his contemporaries, including Castellani praised his work at the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris.

This brooch is a wonderful example of his work and has been set with a ruby, sapphire and diamond. It is in its original case that records on the silk the gold medal that he won in Paris in 1878 and his trading address at that time, 6 Grand Hotel Buildings. Charing Cross. London. HRH Prince Leopold was a client as also recorded on the silk.  He was the eighth child and youngest son of Queen  Victoria and Prince Albert.  He had haemophilia which contributed to his early death following a fall at the age of 30.
